The Prophet Isaiah

On the evening of 29th November 2023 Fr Adrian Graffy gave a presentation entitled ‘the Prophet Isaiah’. Readings from the book of Isaiah are very frequent throughout the season of Advent, and also found at other times of the liturgical year. Fr Adrian pointed out that this large book, comprising 66 chapters, arises from at least three prophets. The ‘first’ Isaiah was active in the eighth century BC, and gave three speeches considered to be messianic prophecies. The material attributed to the ‘second’ Isaiah comes from the time of the exile, and the final chapters, referred to as ‘third’ Isaiah, are possibly the work of several authors. The whole book is an invitation to faith and trust in the one God, creator and saviour of all. The talk offers a preparation for the season of Advent, as well as a general introduction to prophecy in the Hebrew Scriptures.
