To commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the Second Vatican Council document on divine revelation, Dei Verbum, the Catholic Biblical Association of Great Britain (CBA-GB) and the Margaret Beaufort Institute of Theology, Cambridge jointly organised a study day on Saturday 22 November 2025 at the parish of Christ the Eternal High Priest in Gidea Park.
In the first part, the renowned Bible translator and author Fr Nicholas King SJ presented a talk entitled “Dei Verbum, 60 years on”, in which he offered a personal reflection on this document: how does it read today? What insights can we glean from Dei Verbum, and the subsequent flowering of biblical scholarship that it nurtured, to enrich our own lives, today, in a ‘synodal’ church? Further insights were gained through Nicholas’ illuminating interpretation of Luke 24 (journey to Emmaus) and Acts 15 (listening to the promptings of the Spirit). Part two was an informal conversation between Fr Nicholas King and Fr Adrian Graffy (Pontifical Biblical Commission), chaired by Sean Ryan (CBA-GB). They reflected on aspects of Nicholas’ talk, and engaged with questions and comments from those present in person, or who were watching online. The overall aim of the study day is to encourage everyone to deepen their love and knowledge of Scripture. (DV 25, “For ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.”).
A recording of this event will appear here after the event.
