The Gospel according to Paul

Dr Sean Ryan gave a study day on 21st January 2023 on ‘The Gospel according to Paul’. It was held in-person at the Catholic Church of Christ the Eternal High Priest in Gidea Park, and also transmitted via the website www.whatgoodnews.org Dr Ryan, a former Dean of Undergraduate Studies at Heythrop College, London, and Lecturer in Biblical Studies at the University of Roehampton, is Research Associate at Margaret Beaufort Institute of Theology in Cambridge. He is also Chair of the Catholic Biblical Association of Great Britain. Dr Ryan began with an overview of the life of Paul in which he emphasised the centrality of Christ in Paul’s life after his experience on the Damascus road. Paul visited major cities of the Roman empire, and was eventually taken to Rome. The letters of the Pauline corpus were examined and grouped. Dr Ryan encouraged his audience to begin to read the letters with the earliest ones, such as 1 Thessalonians. He also provided an extensive bibliography. The full talks and detailed slides are available free of charge on the www.whatgoodnews.org providing a mini course of introduction to Paul and his writings. Dr Ryan’s visit, which offered serious encouragement to reading Paul, was given on the day before the Sunday of the Word of God and as we approached the feast of St Paul on 25th January.
