Fr Adrian Graffy, parish priest of Christ the Eternal High Priest, Gidea Park, and member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, gave a short talk on the evening of 12th July 2023 in which he took us through the ‘Our Father’. All seven petitions were examined, bearing in mind that they are found in Greek in the New Testament, and have been translated back into Aramaic, the language used by Jesus, by scholars. Particular attention was given to the real meaning of ‘daily’ bread, the question of God ‘leading us’ into ‘temptation’, and the debate over the final words of the prayer, ‘evil’ or ‘the Evil One’. A good crowd came to enjoy a stimulating talk, and questions followed.
