The Year of Faith, which begins on October 11th 2012, is an opportunity for all Catholics to strengthen their faith, to reach out to those who have left but still yearn for God in their lives, and offer a response to those who are searching for meaning and help those who think they do not need God. The Year of Faith has particular significance, marking both the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, and the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
The Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelisation, which is overseeing many aspects of the Year of Faith, has launched a website http://www.annusfidei.va/content/novaevangelizatio/en.html (English language) which lists events taking place during the Year and provides some resources. This site includes online texts of the following documents which are well worth studying:
- Catechism of the Catholic Church
- Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church
- Documents of the Second Vatican Council
Other resources for the Year of Faith
The Chicago priest Fr Robert Barron, well known for his Word on Fire evangelization ministry, sermon podcasts and You Tube video resources, has produced a stunning and powerful 10-episode documentry series on the Catholic faith, simply called Catholicism.
From the sacred lands of Israel to the beating heart of Uganda…from the glorious shrines of Italy, France, and Spain, to the streets of Mexico, Kolkata, and New York City, the fullness of CATHOLICISM is revealed. Journey deep into the Faith as you watch each episode. – Word on Fire website
A number of parishes in our Diocese are running screenings of the Catholicism series: for more information contact your local parish or email wgn [at] whatgoodnews [dot] org; we plan on adding a list of parishes taking part in the near future.
The Catholic Faith Centre, formerly the Catholic Enquiry Office of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales have launched a new website catholicfaith.org.uk aimed at those beginning to explore the Catholic Faith.
The Diocese of Shrewsbury has a comprehensive ‘Faith and Life’ section on their website http://www.dioceseofshrewsbury.org/catholic-faith which is a helpful introduction to the faith.
[Newly added] The Archdiocese of Cardiff have put together a list of resources and ideas for parishes seekign to use the Year of Faith as an opportunity to build up their parishes as ‘communities of disciples': This can be found at http://www.buildupourparish.com/home.php?page_id=139
Finally, this site now has a section called ‘Our Faith‘ intended to provide a very basic introduction to the Catholic faith – at present it is less comprehensive than either of the above two sites but is reasonably accesible and hopefully will be expanded in the near future.
